Published by Vertebrate Publishing, the book is on pre-sale now and will be launched on 21 May.

Covering Edinburgh, East, West and Midlothian and crossing the Firth of Forth into the Kingdom of Fife, the rides range from 17 to 89 kilometres, plus a challenging 244-kilometre bonus route. The routes explore charming fishing villages and the industrial heritage of the Fife coast, follow Scotland’s oldest railway, the 1722 Waggonway in East Lothian, or venture into the Pentland and Lomond Hills.

The longer routes in the book include a route which tracks the Edinburgh bypass on off-road paths, created with round-the-world cycling record holder Mark Beaumont, a multi-day bikepacking adventure inspired by the Rough Stuff Fellowship and a visit to the Great Polish Map of Scotland and Rosslyn Chapel.

default

Researched, ridden and written by the Bikepacking Scotland and Edinburgh Dawn Patrol founder, the routes feature clear and easy-to-use Ordnance Survey maps; easy-to-follow directions; details of distance, timings and difficulty gradings; stunning photography; refreshment stops and local knowledge; and a detailed appendix. Also included is a link to downloadable GPX files.

Stitz, originally from Germany, has lived in Edinburgh since 2009 and has deep ties to the city. From 2010 – 2015 he commuted regularly through Fife and West Lothian, cycling from Stirling home to Edinburgh most days before his round the world trip. He has worked with Welcome to Fife and Visit East Lothian and has most recently collaborated with Pindar Creative on the redesign of the Edinburgh cycle maps.

Markus comments: ‘In my almost 17 years in Edinburgh, only interrupted by a one-year trip by bike around the world, I have seen cycling becoming more visible and used my hometown as a base to explore the rest of Scotland, the UK, and the world. Most recently I took inspiration from the Oslo Dawn Patrol and founded a similar social ride in Edinburgh.’

‘Researching this book was in equal terms easy and very challenging. I want this guidebook to be relevant for people who are lucky enough to call Edinburgh, Fife or East Lothian their home. Almost all my book deliveries in Edinburgh are done by bike, and I wanted to write a book for all the people I have met on those journeys and through the Edinburgh Dawn Patrol.’

‘But I also wanted to create a book which is a useful companion if people visit Scotland’s capital for a few days. Edinburgh is my favourite city in the world – welcoming, buzzing and steeped in natural and architectural beauty. I can’t think of any other city that is home to three UNESCO world heritage sites and hosts some of the world’s most inspiring artists each summer.’

All routes in the book are accessible by public transport, and the book also includes an introduction to gravel riding in Scotland, covering the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, bike and kit advice.

Gravel Rides Edinburgh, Fife & the Lothians is available in all good bookshops, as signed copies directly from the author here and here.

Küat Announces Varial™ — A Revolutionary Roof Cargo Box Featuring Forward-Opening, Three-Sided Access https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/kuat-announces-varial-a-revolutionary-roof-cargo-box-featuring-forward-opening-three-sided-access/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kuat-announces-varial-a-revolutionary-roof-cargo-box-featuring-forward-opening-three-sided-access https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/kuat-announces-varial-a-revolutionary-roof-cargo-box-featuring-forward-opening-three-sided-access/#respond Thu, 16 Apr 2026 23:03:20 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=4140 […]]]> (Springifeld, Missouri) Küat, the award-winning designer of premium vehicle racks and adventure transport systems, today announced the launch of Varial™, a first-of-its-kind rooftop cargo box engineered to make packing, organizing, and accessing gear easier than ever. Designed, formed, and assembled in the USA, the Varial debuts a forward-opening architecture with three-sided access, allowing drivers and passengers to reach their gear from virtually any angle.

Küat announces the launch of Varial™, a first-of-its-kind rooftop cargo box, debuting a forward-opening architecture with three-sided access. ©

“The Varial represents a new way of thinking about rooftop storage,” said Luke Kuschmeader, Founder and CEO of Küat. “For years, cargo boxes have only opened from one side, forcing people to work around the box instead of the box working for them. The Varial fixes that with its 3-sided access at all times. It’s intuitive, beautiful, feature-packed, and built to handle real travel and adventure.”

Forward-Opening, Three-Sided Access
The Varial’s signature innovation is its unique forward-opening door, which enables loading and unloading from the back, driver side, or passenger side. This design eliminates the need to shuffle around the vehicle, reach awkwardly, or deal with restricted access in parking lots or at trailheads.
Users can also lock or unlock the Varial from either side, reducing hassle and removing the need to use a key every time the box is accessed.

Fast, Set and Forget Mounting System
The Varial’s quick-mount hardware allows users to install or remove the cargo box in seconds. The system is engineered for confidence and simplicity, making it as friendly for family road trips as it is for multi-sport athletes.

Premium Construction, No Exposed Hardware
Built from UV-capped ABS for long-lasting protection and durability, the Varial features a clean exterior design with no exposed rivets or hardware. The result is a sleek, modern silhouette that’s more water-resistant and easy to service over time.

Inside, strategically placed mounting points for tie-down straps keep gear secure and organized, whether traveling across town or cross-country. Gas spring struts deliver a smooth, stable opening and closing experience in any weather.

Formed & Assembled in the USA
Proudly formed and assembled in the United States, the Varial reflects Küat’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and long-term product support.

Built for Real Travel
Created for families, road trippers, skiers and snowboarders, car campers, and year-round adventurers, the Varial provides the additional space families and travelers need, without compromising vehicle comfort or cargo accessibility.

“This box is designed for people who want more time outside and less time wrestling with their gear,” said Aaron Houston, R&D Manager at Küat. “Every detail, from the door geometry to the internal mounting points, is thoughtfully considered. The Varial is built to elevate every type of trip, in every season.”

Public Debut at Sea Otter Classic
Varial will make its official, public debut at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California, where attendees can experience the new system firsthand. Visit booth A77. Additional showcases will take place throughout 2026 and beyond.

Availability
The Varial is expected to ship in October of 2026. Detailed specifications, pricing, product videos, and preorder announcements will be available here.

Montreal’s Baumier Launches its First High-Performance B01 Road Bicycle in Quebec https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/montreals-baumier-launches-its-first-high-performance-b01-road-bicycle-in-quebec/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=montreals-baumier-launches-its-first-high-performance-b01-road-bicycle-in-quebec Wed, 08 Apr 2026 12:28:50 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=4108 […]]]> (Montreal, Que.) Montreal-based company Baumier today announces the official market launch of its very first complete bicycle: the B01. Designed, engineered, and manufactured entirely in the Marché Central district, this allroad bike combines the performance of carbon with the durability of titanium to deliver a riding experience that is both high-performing and responsibly built. By positioning itself as truly made in Montreal, Baumier becomes the only company in Canada to locally design and manufacture both high-end carbon frames and carbon wheels (road and gravel), following the launch of its wheel lineup last year.

The B01 is now available on Baumier’s website and through select retailers across Quebec, including in Montreal, Quebec City, and Bromont, with a Toronto rollout planned in the near future.

“After several years of development, trials, and in-house testing, I’m proud to see the B01 come to life and finally share it with cyclists. This project, driven by our team of eight, reflects a distinctive approach rooted in craftsmanship, innovation, and environmental responsibility. Ultimately, Baumier is not trying to reinvent the bicycle, but to rethink our relationship with manufacturing, performance, and time. To us, true performance is something that endures, that respects, and that creates connection,” commented Benjamin du Haÿs, Founder of Baumier.

A Responsible Approach, Grounded in Durability
Designed to stand the test of time and evolve with its rider, the B01 reflects a philosophy where performance and responsibility go hand in hand. Every bike comes with a lifetime warranty and is built with repairability in mind, underscoring Baumier’s commitment to more ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.

The B01 is available in three configurations, Hors-Catégorie, Lifetime, and Timeless, each offering specific customization options. ©

To meet these standards, Baumier developed its own proprietary manufacturing technology, derived from a high-performance process used in the composites industry: Resin Flow Composite (RFC). The result of over eight years of engineering, this process enables an optimal balance of lightness, strength, and zero- waste production, while maintaining the highest performance standards. The B01 frame is constructed from carbon tubes produced using this technology, paired with 3D-printed titanium lugs, creating a structure that is both high-performing, durable, and repairable.

The B01 is available in three configurations, Hors-Catégorie, Lifetime, and Timeless, each offering specific customization options. All models come equipped with Baumier’s in-house wheels, delivering a fully integrated riding experience designed and assembled in the company’s workshops.

Launch Events Across the Country
To celebrate the release of the B01, the Baumier team will travel from city to city by bike, hosting exclusive events where cyclists can discover the model firsthand.

• Montreal – April 10, 5:00–7:00 PM – Siboire Notre-Dame
• Quebec City – Early May, time and location TBC
• Toronto – May 30–31 – Étape 22

Test Report: Kenda’s New Crusher Gravel Tires Outperform on a Variety of Terrain https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/test-report-kenda-crusher-gravel-tires-outperform-on-a-variety-of-terrain/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=test-report-kenda-crusher-gravel-tires-outperform-on-a-variety-of-terrain Tue, 25 Nov 2025 01:16:07 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=3699 […]]]> Kenda Rubber started making bicycles tires in Yuanlin, Taiwan back in 1962. Over the years, the company grew to include full lines of tires for motorcycles, scooters, garden machines and automobiles.

Kenda’s all-new Crusher Gravel tires are hailed as their fastest. ©

During this time, Kenda expanded internationally and also grew their R&D division which helped them to become more competitive at offering a value product that was also performance driven.

Kenda produces a full line of bicycles tires for all market segments including mountain bikes, e-bikes, road, BMX and for the fast-growing gravel cycling sector.

The company currently offers five models of gravel tires, with the Crusher being hailed as the fastest.

Kenda’s Crusher Gravel tires are geared for everyday adventure riding. ©

Available in two versions there are five width options including 35c, 40c, 45c and 50c. Their 60 TPI model is built for durability and geared for everyday adventure riding. The Crusher 120 TPI performance driver model is lighter, more supple and designed for speed, making this a great choice for gravel racing.

My Crusher test tires arrived and I went with the 120 TPI model at a 35c width. I purposely bucked the current trend of wider tires by choosing the narrowest tire in their line-up. This allowed me to ride these tires on my current “all-road” bike, which claims it will accept gravel tires up to 35c, and also run them on narrower, old-school, gravel, non-tubeless rims. In both cases the tires were a very easy set-up.

The Crusher tires offer easy set up and rolled smooth and fast on a variety of terrain. ©

Out on the road, the Crusher tires rolled smooth and fast. Thanks to the uniform, center-rib layout they were firm and quiet. The tires confidently transitioned to packed gravel and nicely managed smaller rocks and roots as well. Larger hits were absorbed compliments of its more compliant sidewall.

The Crusher’s larger outer knobs held firm on loose gravel corners, and provided solid grip on steep, loose gravel climbs. I was even more impressed at how they bit into the large, damp, slick maple leaves which covered parts of the trail allowing me to continue riding at speed.

Kenda’s Crusher gravel tires are great all-rounders and ready for most adventures. ©

Living on B.C.’s “wet” coast, deep mud is a common feature on our trail systems. Although the Crushers are more hard-packed oriented, they could easily get by on some less extreme mud sections.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with Kenda’s Crusher gravel tires that would be a great all-rounder for most adventure riders and gravel racers.

Not only did they perform nicely on a variety of terrain, but they fit like a charm on my “all-road” bike and breathed new life into my old-school gravel bike.

With winter now on our doorstep, I plan to leave the Crushers on my “all-road” bike to enhance my adventure possibilities.

The SRP starts at $105 CAD/$73.95 US per tire and for more information please visit here.

Test Report: Trek’s FX+7 Delivers Lightweight, Comfort & Style for Commuting & Adventures https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/test-report-treks-fx7-delivers-lightweight-comfort-style-for-commuting-adventures/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=test-report-treks-fx7-delivers-lightweight-comfort-style-for-commuting-adventures Fri, 31 Oct 2025 00:24:14 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=3634 […]]]> Trek introduced their new line of FX+ lightweight urban e-bikes in late 2024 and I was excited to test their top-of-line FX+ 7 model this fall.

Trek’s FX+7 is a lightweight and stylish premium urban e-bike for commuting and two-wheel adventures. ©

When I picked it up at Cycle Solutions in Toronto I was immediately impressed by its lightweight and stylish frame. It is the lightest e-bike I have ever ridden and it was easy to maneuver on city streets and a range of trails. At 41 lbs it’s an ideal e-bike for riders who may need to carry it up or down a flight of stairs at home, the office, or to access their storage etc.

The FX+ 7 is powered by a 250-watt TQ HPR50 motor and boasts 50Nm of torque. The motor’s unique harmonic pin-ring technology promises quiet, natural-feeling e-assist up to 32 kph, making for a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

The system is supported by a TQ 360Wh battery that’s integrated into the downtube and can only be removed by a dealer. The battery has a range of 80km/50 miles, and there’s an optional compact 160Wh range extender that mounts in the water bottle cage and allows you to expand your adventures up to 120 km/75 miles.

There are three pedal e-assist modes which are easy to toggle between via a control button on the left side of the handlebar. Walk assist is also included and as you need to depress the button while walking the e-bike it can be a bit awkward. But the FX+ 7 is so light that I found no discernible difference walking it without the walk-assist feature.

A controller with a display screen on the frame allows you to easily toggle between a range of useful riding stats such as your speed, kilometers travelled, and the percentage of power remaining in the battery. This last feature is particularly helpful because it adjusts depending on the e-assist mode being used.

The entire e-system meets the highest standard UL 2849 certification, the leading e-bike safety regulations.

The low-emission aluminum frame features internal cable routing and a mid-step design which is between a step-through and a sloping cross bar frame. The presentation is a stylish e-bike with sporty vibes.

The 10-speed Shimano Cues drivetrain features their new LinkGlide technology for longer lasting durability of the chain, cassette, and chainrings. The front and rear Shimano hydraulic disc brakes provided smooth and reliable stopping power.

Like any new e-bike, it takes a bit of time to get used to. Initially, the natural-feeling pedal assist transitions made me wonder if the level selected had engaged, but following various test rides I could distinguish the subtleties of each level.

I was impressed by how smooth, comfortable and easy the FX+ 7 is to handle on trails, hills and a mix of urban infrastructure. On a few hills I found myself looking for a bit more power, but overall the TQ e-drive system performed well and was whisper quiet.

The Shimano Cues shifting was smooth and responsive and I was surprised at how similar it was to riding my acoustic hybrid bike when not using the e-assist.

The handlebars were well spaced for ease of handling and the Bontrager Verse Comp saddle was very comfortable, even after spending four hours riding.

An important visibility and safety feature is the integrated Spanninga front light that’s made for e-bikes, and the Herrmans rear light – both lights are powered by the battery.

On a fully charged battery I covered 68 km using a mix of e-assist modes while travelling between 13 and 27 km per hour.

Recharging the battery is easy via a charging port located on the downtube. A secure rubber stopper prevents moisture and dust from entering. It takes about 4-5 hours for a complete recharge.

Designed to meet a range of commuting and recreational activities, the FX+ 7 comes equipped with a sturdy MIK-compatible rear rack with a 25kg capacity, and an integrated Quad Lock phone mount on the stem which also charges your smart phone while you ride. This is a very practical detail for those recording their rides and relying on GPS without needing to pack a portable phone charger. A Quad Lock phone case or universal mount is required.

You can also connect the FX+ 7 to the Trek Central app for a variety of e-bike customization options such as turn-by-turn directions and a handy range calculator.

The bike also comes with a solid, adjustable-length kickstand, a water bottle cage as mentioned, but no bell which is the first upgrade I’d make as it’s an important safety feature and legally required in Ontario. Riders should check their local jurisdictions.

The Trek FX+ 7 Midstep is a stylish and versatile urban e-bike that provides comfortable city commuting and recreational riding on a range of multi-use paths and trails. Its lightweight package, premium features, sleek design and maneuverability make it a strong contender in the premium class of urban e-bikes.

The SRP is $5,499.99 and for more information please visit here.
