Tern’s new GSD S10 Gen 3 is a great example of innovation and what an electric cargo bike can be. ©

The company’s recent release of their GSD S10 Gen 3 is a great example of innovation and what an electric cargo bike can be. As the transportation landscape continues to evolve, it’s ready to replace your car, or a second vehicle.

Simply put, the Tern GSD S10 is an efficient, and emission-free way of hauling cargo, whether that’s equipment, groceries, your significant other, your kids, and even your dog.

While the 6061 aluminum frame is not the lightest on the market, its construction is designed to not only get the job done, but it’s also made to last, and is backed by Tern’s 10-year frame warranty. In addition, it’s third-party tested to meet German cargo bike standard DIN 79010 for superior safety and reliability.

Durability does not end with the frame as the Tern GSD S10 is complimented with an array of quality parts. Shimano’s Deore 10-speed drivetrain provides accurate reliable shifting while the Magura MT-C ABS 4 piston brakes are set to manage the heaviest of loads.

Powered by a Bosch Cargo line motor with 400% assist and 85 Nm of torque. ©

Tern’s custom Suntour front suspension fork helps manage and smooth out the ride under load and absorb large bumps or potholes. Add 20-inch Schwalbe Pick-Up tires and a Cane Creek suspension seat post and get ready for a reliable and comfortable ride.

Powered by a Bosch Cargo line motor with 400% assist and 85 Nm of torque, the Tern GSD S10 is definitely up for the task, whatever it may be.

A Bosch Powerpack 545 Wh battery, that can be upgraded to 800 Wh, is neatly tucked behind the seat tube and offers 98 km of range. There are also frame mounts to house an additional battery for extended excursions of up to 196 km of range.

The powerful Bosch Cargo line motor is managed via the Bosch Smart System utilizing an LED Remote controller and an easy-to-read Kiox 300 colour display.

The bar-mounted controller is very intuitive and allows easy management of the four power-assist levels. The Kiox 300 delivers all the important ride data, along with theft protection, ride customization, and navigation tools. Plus, the entire system is UL2849 certified, the gold standard safety certification for electric bicycles.

Thanks to features on the Bosch Smart System like walk assist and hill assist, manually moving the bike, or starting on a hill, especially under load, makes life much easier. With the addition of the Bosch Anti-Lock Braking System, quick, seamlessly smooth braking is at your fingertips.

The Atlas G rear rack has a 100 kg (220-pound) capacity… ©

The Tern GSD S10 comes equipped with an extremely bright 700 lumen Ignis front headlight offering high/low beam options, all operated by bar-mounted push buttons. The RearStop brake light is always on while riding adding an extra level of safety.

Built to handle a gross vehicle weight of 210kg (463 pounds), the Atlas G rear rack has a 100 kg (220-pound) capacity, and our test model came with a pair of waterproof Cargo Hold 72 panniers.

These massive rolltop bags have a 72-litre capacity which saw me stuffing them to the max for my rides. I appreciated the easy use of the magnetic Fidlock buckles which allowed easy access to the panniers, even with full fingered gloves on.

Our test bike also came with a front Hauler Rack that offers 20kg of capacity to secure a variety of loads, along with mounting holes on the base to bolt on a crate, or even secure a small pet carrier.

An emission-free way of hauling equipment, groceries, your significant other, your kids, and even your dog. ©

The upright and balanced rider position allows you to confidently move through traffic, handle tight corners and navigate congested areas under load.

Out on the road the GSD 10 is at home in an urban environment. The e-cargo bike’s wide wheel base and lower centre of gravity makes it a fun and surprisingly nimble performer despite its hefty weight of 82lbs.

The powerful Cargo Line motor gets the bike up to speed quickly and provided consistent power for an extremely stable ride, even under a heavy load.

I was super impressed with how smooth the Tern felt on the road. The combination of the Suntour front suspension fork, and the Cane Creek suspension seatpost really did their job well.

Plus, the wide profile aluminum fenders kept me clean from water and road grime on those rainy ride days.

Even without those features on our test model, a pillow on the rear rack did the trick on the Tern for dinner out on the town with my wife – an added treat was not having to valet park it.

The easy-to-use Atlas Lockstand Gen 2 dual leg kickstand with remote unlock, patented technology. ©

I love the fact that these bikes not only can carry large loads of cargo, but also an adult passenger like my wife or adult children. With the addition of their Clubhouse seat pad and Sidekick footpegs, you’re ready to leave the car at home again.

Rest assured that the easy-to-use Atlas Lockstand Gen 2 dual leg kickstand will provide solid support when parked, and it comes with remote unlock, patented technology. Unless you know how to unlock it, you will not be able to wheel away the bike.

The GSD S10 has additional built-in security devices that help to deter thieves. The Abus or AXA front wheel lock is a quick, easy way to secure the bike for short term parking while the Smart System theft protection adds additional peace of mind.

An AXA front wheel lock is a quick, easy way to secure the bike for short term parking. ©

Other features include the Tern Andros adjustable stem which makes front end adjustments a breeze, while the adjustable seat post takes care of the back end. The one frame size accommodates riders from 4’11” to 6’ 7”.

The Andros adjustable stem allows you to fold the handle bars making the Tern GSD S10 even more at home in urban environments as it also has the ability to be parked vertically which is an added bonus for apartment dwellers. You can easily tip the cargo bike up on its rear rack to fit it into elevators and then tuck it away in a corner. The foldable handlebars also help when transporting the bike in the back of a minivan.

The Tern GSD S10 sets an admirable benchmark for e-cargo bikes as a strong, reliable, and versatile transportation option – the fun factor is a bonus.

The SRP is $12,425 and for more information please visit here.

Test Report: Baumier’s RT40 Wheelset Delivers a Remarkable Blend of Comfort, Stiffness & Durability https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/test-report-baumiers-rt40-wheelset-delivers-a-remarkable-blend-of-comfort-stiffness-durability/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=test-report-baumiers-rt40-wheelset-delivers-a-remarkable-blend-of-comfort-stiffness-durability Sat, 20 Jun 2026 23:39:11 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=4448 […]]]> June 20, 2026 - Launched in 2025, Baumier carbon wheels are handmade in Montreal’s Marché Central district and designed for comfort, speed and durability. The wheels are constructed with a natural carbon weave and a no-frills finish.

Baumier’s RT40 wheelset is designed for performance, durability, and comfort… and come with a lifetime warranty. z©

Baumier wheels offer two remarkable qualities – a lifetime warranty and they’re made in Canada – and we were excited to test their RT40 Lifetime wheelset this spring. Other wheels in the lineup include the RT40 Hors-Catégorie (HC), the GT24 Ultralight, and the GT24 Lifetime.

Founded by Benjamin du Haÿs, who previously co-founded Mobeewave that developed secure contactless payment technology and was acquired by Apple, Baumier also recently launched its very first complete bicycle, the B01 that also features their wheels – read our Baumier B01 Toronto launch report here.

Baumier also recently launched its very first complete bicycle, the B01 that also features their wheels. ©

According to the Baumier website, “From manufacturing to assembly, Baumier takes the time to ensure that every rim meets the highest standard of quality and reliability. We’re all about high-performance wheels designed to last.” Of note, the company also reflects a philosophy, “where performance and responsibility go hand in hand,” underscoring Baumier’s commitment to more ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.

When looking for a set of carbon fibre wheels, there’s a lot to consider such as size and weight which are two key factors in the evaluation process. The Baumier RT 40 wheels measure up at 40mm in height with a 19mm inner width, and they weigh in at 1,387gms for the wheelset.

Founder Benjamin du Haÿs at the Baumier wheels launch… cheers. ©

Where these wheels truly differentiate themselves from the rest of the peloton, is in their durability. The RT 40 utilizes 24 titanium spokes and a titanium freehub body, which are intended to maximize longevity, and as noted, Baumier confidently backs their wheelsets with a lifetime guarantee.

While many brands market carbon wheels primarily around speed, Baumier positions their RT40 as a wheelset designed to be ridden hard for many years, rather than be replaced after a few seasons.

The wheels can be configured with a SRAM or Shimano compatible freehub body, and come with a center lock disc brake mount and thru axles. Being tubeless ready is another nice feature, but for our test report they were ridden with tubes for simplicity’s sake.

These wheels are meant to be ridden all day long also shine when the road turns to gravel. ©

The RT40s are the kind of wheels that you can put on your bike and ride all day long, and in all conditions. These wheels offer a natural feel and stiffness while cornering and climbing, but not a teeth-rattling, rigid feel when the road gets rough.

They do a good job of taking any road vibrations out of the ride, and they make the ride feel more compliant and easier during longer excursions.

Baumier carbon wheels are handmade in Montreal’s Marché Central district. ©

Another standout feature of the RT40 wheelset is its focus on ride comfort. Baumier claims the titanium spokes naturally absorb vibration, creating a smoother ride than many traditional carbon wheelsets.

For endurance riders, gran fondo participants, and cyclists who spend long hours on rough pavement, this could be a genuine advantage over ultra-stiff race wheels.

These wheels also shine when the road turns to gravel. Their dampening quality really help take the edge out of gravel roads which helps minimize bike vibrations, allowing for longer gravels rides and less fatigue at the end of the outing.

Baumier confidently backs their wheelsets with a lifetime guarantee. ©

The 40 mm profile is a great height and is the sweet spot between aerodynamics and crosswind stability. This depth is great for all-around road riding because it maintains its aerodynamic qualities without becoming overly difficult to handle in gusty conditions.

The no frills finish also provides a durable look to the wheels that isn’t high polish, but rather presents a visually striking classic carbon weave that can handle the rigours of gravel races and still come out looking great.

Baumier’s RT40 wheelset is less about chasing marginal gains and more about creating a premium wheelset that remains comfortable, dependable, and enjoyable over thousands of kilometers – all with an aero advantage. Made in Canada is just the icing on the cake!

The Sunburn No One Talks About & Why Cyclists Over 50 Need to Take Sun Protection Seriously https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/the-sunburn-no-one-talks-about-why-cyclists-over-50-need-to-take-sun-protection-seriously/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-sunburn-no-one-talks-about-why-cyclists-over-50-need-to-take-sun-protection-seriously Mon, 18 May 2026 16:47:27 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=4242 […]]]> May 18, 2026 - You’ve probably earned your miles. Decades of riding, thousands of kilometres, the kind of fitness that makes younger riders take a second look. But every one of those years in the saddle has also been accumulating something else — UV damage. And after 50, the stakes change.

Protecting your skin is vital for cyclists who receive a disproportionate amount of UV exposure. ©

The Parts of Your Body That Take the Worst UV Hit
When you’re in a cycling position — leaning forward, head tilted up — the geometry of your body changes everything about where the sun hits you. The Skin Cancer Foundation points out that cyclists receive disproportionate UV exposure on the back of the neck, back of the ears, and face — areas that are both constantly exposed and almost never adequately protected.

A study measuring UV exposure across different body sites on cyclists during a seven-day charity ride found that average daily exposures exceeded one minimal erythemal dose (the minimum amount of UV needed to cause sunburn) at virtually every site tested. The highest exposures were recorded at the top of the head — which is exactly where helmet vents channel air, and exactly where most cyclists assume their helmet is protecting them. It isn’t.

A Tour de Suisse study found that professional cyclists during an eight-stage race were exposed to UV levels more than 30 times over the internationally recommended daily limits.

A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that while most cyclists apply sunscreen to their face, only 43% applied it to their ears — one of the highest-risk zones for skin cancer. Just 31% applied it to their arms.

Why Age Changes Everything About Sun Damage
The Skin Cancer Foundation is direct on this point: skin cancer is predominantly a disease of the elderly. At least one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70. The majority of people who develop melanoma are white men over the age of 55. More than half of all skin cancer-related deaths occur in people over 65.

The reason isn’t just that older people have had more sun exposure — though that’s a factor. It’s that aging skin becomes less capable of defending itself against UV damage.

As we age, the immune system weakens, the skin becomes thinner, and the body’s ability to repair UV-damaged DNA decreases. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV light itself further suppresses the immune system, accelerating the very decline that makes older skin more vulnerable. It’s a compounding effect: more past damage, less capacity to recover, more outdoor activity — all converging at the same time in your life.

One bad sunburn in older age, according to researchers, “may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back” — triggering a cancer process that decades of accumulated damage have been building toward.

Cyclists over 50 face a particular combination of risk factors that most dermatologists and sports medicine researchers flag as serious: cumulative lifetime UV exposure, sweat increases photosensitivity, and older skin shows damage faster.

Research consistently finds that male cyclists — who make up the majority of riders in the over-50 demographic — are significantly less likely to use sunscreen than female cyclists. A study from New Orleans found men were 20% less likely to use sunscreen than women, and research shows men have a higher likelihood of developing skin cancer and experiencing immunosuppression from UV radiation.

Even cyclists who apply sunscreen properly face a problem: sweat. Research from the British Association of Dermatologists found that up to 80% of sunscreen can be lost through sweating during exercise. The recommendation is to reapply every two hours — something almost no cyclist actually does mid-ride.

Protecting the Spots Sunscreen Misses
The ShadyRider was designed specifically for the cycling position. Its wide fabric brim shields the face, ears, and neck — the exact areas where cyclists receive the highest UV exposure and the areas least covered by traditional cycling gear. Unlike sunscreen, it doesn’t wash off. Unlike a regular cap, it’s designed to stay stable at speeds up to 50 km/h.

If you’re riding more than two hours at a time without physical UV protection on your face and neck, you are accumulating damage that no after-the-fact sunscreen application will undo.

The ShadyRider was built by a founder with over 20 years in outdoor sports who understood exactly this problem. Its wide fabric brim shields the face, ears, and neck — the highest UV-exposure zones in the cycling position — across the entire ride. Its 99% UV-blocking polycarbonate lens protects the eyes from glare and UV damage simultaneously.

For riders 50+ who know what decades of sun exposure can add up to, this is the kind of protection that fits seamlessly into a ride rather than disrupting it.

ShadyRider snaps onto your helmet in seconds and blocks 99% of UV rays. It’s built in Canada for riders who take their health as seriously as they take their riding.

Wilbur Tarnasky is a Canadian outdoor sports enthusiast and inventor with over 20 years of experience in active outdoor sports living. He created The ShadyRider cycling helmet brim after recognizing a gap in cyclist protection for traffic visibility and sun protection. Learn more here and enjoy trying their gear finder quiz for 15% off. New Gravel Cycling Guidebook Features 15 Bike Adventures Around Scotland’s Capital City https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/new-gravel-cycling-guidebook-features-15-bike-adventures-around-scotlands-capital-city/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-gravel-cycling-guidebook-features-15-bike-adventures-around-scotlands-capital-city Fri, 08 May 2026 03:09:10 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=4182 […]]]> May 7, 2026 - Gravel Rides Edinburgh, Fife & the Lothians, the latest guidebook from adventure writer and filmmaker Markus Stitz showcases 15 of the finest gravel bike adventures around Scotland’s capital city. Published by Vertebrate Publishing, the book is on pre-sale now and will be launched on 21 May.

Covering Edinburgh, East, West and Midlothian and crossing the Firth of Forth into the Kingdom of Fife, the rides range from 17 to 89 kilometres, plus a challenging 244-kilometre bonus route. The routes explore charming fishing villages and the industrial heritage of the Fife coast, follow Scotland’s oldest railway, the 1722 Waggonway in East Lothian, or venture into the Pentland and Lomond Hills.

The longer routes in the book include a route which tracks the Edinburgh bypass on off-road paths, created with round-the-world cycling record holder Mark Beaumont, a multi-day bikepacking adventure inspired by the Rough Stuff Fellowship and a visit to the Great Polish Map of Scotland and Rosslyn Chapel.

default

Researched, ridden and written by the Bikepacking Scotland and Edinburgh Dawn Patrol founder, the routes feature clear and easy-to-use Ordnance Survey maps; easy-to-follow directions; details of distance, timings and difficulty gradings; stunning photography; refreshment stops and local knowledge; and a detailed appendix. Also included is a link to downloadable GPX files.

Stitz, originally from Germany, has lived in Edinburgh since 2009 and has deep ties to the city. From 2010 – 2015 he commuted regularly through Fife and West Lothian, cycling from Stirling home to Edinburgh most days before his round the world trip. He has worked with Welcome to Fife and Visit East Lothian and has most recently collaborated with Pindar Creative on the redesign of the Edinburgh cycle maps.

Markus comments: ‘In my almost 17 years in Edinburgh, only interrupted by a one-year trip by bike around the world, I have seen cycling becoming more visible and used my hometown as a base to explore the rest of Scotland, the UK, and the world. Most recently I took inspiration from the Oslo Dawn Patrol and founded a similar social ride in Edinburgh.’

‘Researching this book was in equal terms easy and very challenging. I want this guidebook to be relevant for people who are lucky enough to call Edinburgh, Fife or East Lothian their home. Almost all my book deliveries in Edinburgh are done by bike, and I wanted to write a book for all the people I have met on those journeys and through the Edinburgh Dawn Patrol.’

‘But I also wanted to create a book which is a useful companion if people visit Scotland’s capital for a few days. Edinburgh is my favourite city in the world – welcoming, buzzing and steeped in natural and architectural beauty. I can’t think of any other city that is home to three UNESCO world heritage sites and hosts some of the world’s most inspiring artists each summer.’

All routes in the book are accessible by public transport, and the book also includes an introduction to gravel riding in Scotland, covering the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, bike and kit advice.

Designed, formed, and assembled in the USA, the Varial debuts a forward-opening architecture with three-sided access, allowing drivers and passengers to reach their gear from virtually any angle.

Küat announces the launch of Varial™, a first-of-its-kind rooftop cargo box, debuting a forward-opening architecture with three-sided access. ©

“The Varial represents a new way of thinking about rooftop storage,” said Luke Kuschmeader, Founder and CEO of Küat. “For years, cargo boxes have only opened from one side, forcing people to work around the box instead of the box working for them. The Varial fixes that with its 3-sided access at all times. It’s intuitive, beautiful, feature-packed, and built to handle real travel and adventure.”

Forward-Opening, Three-Sided Access
The Varial’s signature innovation is its unique forward-opening door, which enables loading and unloading from the back, driver side, or passenger side. This design eliminates the need to shuffle around the vehicle, reach awkwardly, or deal with restricted access in parking lots or at trailheads.
Users can also lock or unlock the Varial from either side, reducing hassle and removing the need to use a key every time the box is accessed.

Fast, Set and Forget Mounting System
The Varial’s quick-mount hardware allows users to install or remove the cargo box in seconds. The system is engineered for confidence and simplicity, making it as friendly for family road trips as it is for multi-sport athletes.

Premium Construction, No Exposed Hardware
Built from UV-capped ABS for long-lasting protection and durability, the Varial features a clean exterior design with no exposed rivets or hardware. The result is a sleek, modern silhouette that’s more water-resistant and easy to service over time.

Montreal’s Baumier Launches its First High-Performance B01 Road Bicycle in Quebec https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/montreals-baumier-launches-its-first-high-performance-b01-road-bicycle-in-quebec/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=montreals-baumier-launches-its-first-high-performance-b01-road-bicycle-in-quebec Wed, 08 Apr 2026 12:28:50 +0000 https://cyclinggreatescapes.com/?p=4108 […]]]> April 8, 2026 - (Montreal, Que.) Montreal-based company Baumier today announces the official market launch of its very first complete bicycle: the B01. Designed, engineered, and manufactured entirely in the Marché Central district, this allroad bike combines the performance of carbon with the durability of titanium to deliver a riding experience that is both high-performing and responsibly built. By positioning itself as truly made in Montreal, Baumier becomes the only company in Canada to locally design and manufacture both high-end carbon frames and carbon wheels (road and gravel), following the launch of its wheel lineup last year.

The B01 is now available on Baumier’s website and through select retailers across Quebec, including in Montreal, Quebec City, and Bromont, with a Toronto rollout planned in the near future.

“After several years of development, trials, and in-house testing, I’m proud to see the B01 come to life and finally share it with cyclists. This project, driven by our team of eight, reflects a distinctive approach rooted in craftsmanship, innovation, and environmental responsibility. Ultimately, Baumier is not trying to reinvent the bicycle, but to rethink our relationship with manufacturing, performance, and time. To us, true performance is something that endures, that respects, and that creates connection,” commented Benjamin du Haÿs, Founder of Baumier.

A Responsible Approach, Grounded in Durability
Designed to stand the test of time and evolve with its rider, the B01 reflects a philosophy where performance and responsibility go hand in hand. Every bike comes with a lifetime warranty and is built with repairability in mind, underscoring Baumier’s commitment to more ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.

The B01 is available in three configurations, Hors-Catégorie, Lifetime, and Timeless, each offering specific customization options. ©

To meet these standards, Baumier developed its own proprietary manufacturing technology, derived from a high-performance process used in the composites industry: Resin Flow Composite (RFC). The result of over eight years of engineering, this process enables an optimal balance of lightness, strength, and zero- waste production, while maintaining the highest performance standards. The B01 frame is constructed from carbon tubes produced using this technology, paired with 3D-printed titanium lugs, creating a structure that is both high-performing, durable, and repairable.

The B01 is available in three configurations, Hors-Catégorie, Lifetime, and Timeless, each offering specific customization options. All models come equipped with Baumier’s in-house wheels, delivering a fully integrated riding experience designed and assembled in the company’s workshops.

Launch Events Across the Country
To celebrate the release of the B01, the Baumier team will travel from city to city by bike, hosting exclusive events where cyclists can discover the model firsthand.

• Montreal – April 10, 5:00–7:00 PM – Siboire Notre-Dame
• Quebec City – Early May, time and location TBC
• Toronto – May 30–31 – Étape 22

These events will give participants the opportunity to experience the B01 in person, meet the Baumier team, and engage with the brand in a welcoming and inspiring environment.

What Makes The Atlas Rack Pack So Special?

100% Waterproof
Made from TPU fabric with Hypalon reinforcements, fully welded seams, and a roll top enclosure. You can be fully confident that your gear will remain dry and protected, even if you don’t quite make that stream crossing.

12 Liter Capacity
Not all trip segments have resupply options. When you need room for some extra food and water the Atlas Rack Pack’s 12L capacity will be ready. The 12L capacity is measured while still rolling the closure three times.

Side pockets for easy, organized access… ©

Quick Stash Straps and Pockets
A criss crossing bungee cord on top and stretch pockets on the side of the bag are ideal for a rain jacket or warm layer you want quick access to or that bag of gummies you picked up at the last resupply.

No Floppy Bags Here!
The attachments straps secure the bag to the deck of the rack at four points to stop it from jostling around. The quick locking buckles make it simple and easy to install and remove.

Dropper Compatible
Moving your gear from a seat bag to our Deck Pack gives you full use of your dropper again. The front end of the bag is tapered to help with seat clearance, even on small frames.

All contact points between the Atlas Rack Pack and rack are silent, secure, and strong. ©
