The company launched its first e-bike back in 1937 but it didn’t take off, and when the Gazelle revisited the concept again in 1990 the timing was perfect.
Now 70% of the bicycles they produce are e-bikes. We were stoked to test their Ultimate C8 Smart System urban e-bike for a more in-depth look at one of their models that offers a great blend of style, comfort and performance.
The Ultimate C8 combines traditional Dutch pedigree in a sporty, attractive, fun-to-ride e-bike. The upright geometry and low-step aluminum frame makes it easy to mount and dismount.
Our test model came in an eye-popping Pine Green Gloss colour, hand-painted at the Dieren factory.
The 28-inch tires and narrow curved handlebars keep you tall in the saddle and provide a sleek, road savvy touch to nicely maximize efficiency on flat terrain and gravel paths.
The massive fenders and internal geared rear hub transmission mean both rider and drivetrain are well protected from rainy conditions.
The Ultimate C8 is powered by a Bosch Active Line Plus Smart System motor, the quietest motor in its line-up. With 50Nm of torque this e-bike gets up to speed quickly and is paired with a lockable Bosch 500Wh lithium-ion battery that has a range up to 160km.
The ease and simplicity of the Bosch Purion bar-mounted display controller is a welcome touch. It helps navigate the four assist modes while providing information like speed, distance travelled, battery use and life, cadence, watts, calories and more.
It also operates the powerful Herrmans MR8 front light and Spanninga Commuter Glow rear light with the press of button.
For more metrics, and to enhance your ride experience, the Bosch eBike Flow app is available to connect with your smartphone. The app allows you to customize modes and displays, helps with navigation and route planning, and even helps protect your bike with an e-bike lock and alarm. In addition, it provides the latest updates to your Bosch system.
The 8-speed Shimano Nexus internal hub offers accurate shifting and gearing to tackle a variety of terrain. Paired with a Gates Carbon Belt drive system, it’s smooth and requires minimal maintenance. A chainguard provides a nice added touch.
Powerful Shimano hydraulic disc brakes deliver strong and controlled braking under all conditions.
The stock e-bike-specific Schwalbe Energizer Plus 2-inch tires are road savvy, delivering a smooth, lively feel on flat roads along with stability and good grip on fast, steep descents. Paired with Dutch 19, double-wall aluminum rims, which were hand-laced at the Dieren factory, you’re poised for many reliable and performance-driven rides.
The Ultimate C8 turned out to be a perfect commuter e-bike for me, as my 17-kilometre ride to work covered conditions very similar to the Netherlands, being flat, with gravel dykes and of course some rain.
On my first ride I used the Turbo mode, and by keeping to paved roads I arrived at my destination in about 35 minutes, which left me with 70% battery life for my return journey home.
The next day I mainly used Auto mode which yielded me the same riding time but with 77% battery life left. The Auto mode is a nice feature, as it adjusts the power assist needed for efficiency on hills — or in my case headwinds.
On my third ride I took a combination of road and gravel dykes, using mainly Turbo mode. This ride resulted in a similar travel time with 70% battery life remaining.
On my return rides home, I hit some hills to test the climbing prowess of the Ultimate C8. The 8-speed Nexus Hub and Bosch e-drive did its job, allowing me to tackle most hills with a fairly easy ascent.
If your commute consists of longer, steeper inclines you might consider opting for Gazelle’s Ultimate T10, which features a traditional drivetrain along with a couple of easier gearing options. Compared to my carbon road bike, the Ultimate C8 is the hands-down winner for my commute.
While ride times were about the same, the C8 allows me to arrive at work dressed and ready to go, rather than wearing my road bike gear for the commute and then changing when arriving at my destination.
A nice yet mostly unnoticeable feature is the telescopic spring, 40mm, centre suspension mono-shock in the bike’s headtube that smoothed out bumps and the gravel portion of the ride.
The front light was more than bright enough, while the rear red light added high visibility with its wrap-around placement on the aluminum MIK rear rack. The full fenders also did their job nicely by protecting me from water and road grime.
The Ultimate C8 showed its fun side as well, as the stiff frame and low centre of gravity provided stability when descending hills at speed, with the slightly more aggressive head angle offering nimble and responsive turning. The Ultimate C8 would also be a great choice as a fitness or adventure e-bike.
The step-through frame design makes mounting and dismounting the Ultimate C8 a breeze, great for riders of various heights and when wearing non-cycling clothing.
My daughter Maggie, fresh off her Olympic track debut in Paris, took the e-bike out for a spin and loved the simplicity and comfort of being able to wear her casual clothing with a backpack as she cruised with ease to meet up with a friend at a café.
Coming complete with kickstand, bell, and AXA frame lock, the Ultimate C8 means you’re set to get out on the road for any commute, errand, meet-up, or to start exploring.
It is also comforting to know that by owning a Gazelle you get 130 years of cycling expertise packed into every ride — and you don’t have to move to the Netherlands to enjoy the experience.
The SRP is $5,399, and for more information please visit here.

The MOS Uplift story began in 2015 in Quebec City at an event called Start-Up Weekend. The challenge for the assembled would-be entrepreneurs: create a working model of an innovative product and draft a business plan. The concept of a roof rack that could be lowered over the side of the vehicle to facilitate loading gear was a popular one, and a team formed from these humble beginnings.
Refining the idea over the next few years, the company sold the first 60 MOS Racks in 2019. Based on feedback from initial customers, the designers refined the manufacturing process to make it more practical and sustainable.
Renamed the MOS Uplift, the revamped design is stronger, elegant, and easy to use. The hydraulic mechanism allows your bike or other gear to be supported and lowered 24in/61cm over the side of the car while keeping it safely away from the vehicle, thereby making it easier to load and unload your gear.
Following the arrival of our test unit, it was assembled and installed in well under an hour. Note that installation requires that your vehicle is equipped with rooftop crossbars, and it’s recommended to have a second person’s help lifting the rack onto the car.
The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and there are videos available on the company’s website and on YouTube. Alternatively, the rack can be installed at a retailer.
The Uplift can be used on its own or with cradles for kayaks and canoes, or with the addition of bike racks or a cargo box. It took us moments to install a Thule ProRide single bike rail, and the Uplift is wide enough to fit a double rail or two slim single rails.
To bring the rack down to chest height for loading, simply rotate the latches 90 degrees counter-clockwise, then pull the rack away from the car and down to the level of the door handles. We noticed significant resistance to the downward motion when the rack is empty, but when a bike or other cargo is loaded, the extra weight allows the rack to be lowered much more easily.
A standard bicycle is simple to lift onto the rack, but for heavier bikes, such as e-bikes, two people can easily manage. Once the bike is fastened, the hydraulic lift arms make easy work of raising the rack and bike up and into place on top of the car. The latches snap closed automatically to ensure that the bike is held securely.
A driving test confirmed that the rack holds tightly, with no rattle or sway. Upon arrival at the start of the ride, it’s easy to lower the rack, remove the bike, and begin your excursion.
Most vehicles can accommodate two Uplift units, one on each side. The rack is compatible with a wide range of bike rails, watercraft cradles and roof boxes, which need to be purchased separately.
The Uplift is rated for a load of 85lbs/38kg, including the attachments and sports gear.
Be aware that the MOS Uplift adds approximately 24 in/61cm of height above the roof bars, and it requires a clearance of 6in/10cm from the car when lowered. The new design facilitates quick removal of the rack for low-height garages; the nuts can be loosened without tools, and the assembled rack can be easily lifted off the roof for storage — a second person’s assistance is helpful.
The MOS Uplift is intuitive to use and makes it easier to explore new terrain, either solo or with friends.
The Uplift retails for $1,099.95 in Canada and a lock is optional. To find retailers, check compatibility and learn more, visit here.
]]>Arid Carbon: The Ultra Gravel Bike
Riding a bike in an arid environment, regardless of terrain, can be seriously demanding. Bike and rider alike may be pushed to their very limits. The extremes of temperature, poor grip, and general exposure make it a significant challenge… yet thankfully it’s often incredibly exhilarating too.
Here at Mondraker we thrive on that sensation. We live and work in one of Europe’s most arid regions, surrounded by dry, rocky, loose terrain where grip is often non-existent. Those feelings, that experience, led us to create in perhaps the most appropriate place possible our best gravel bike imaginable: the new Mondraker Arid Carbon.
Expanding the Territory
Arid Carbon is our new gravel bike. A bike that’s here to expand our presence in the segment where the DUSTY e-Gravel bike has already carved its own niche. We’re simply, organically, growing the range, because at Mondraker gravel biking isn’t just the latest thing… it’s become an intrinsic part of our identity.
Arid Carbon, our first non-assist gravel bike, manages to borrow some design cues from its e-Bike cousin while managing to keep itself well out of the other’s shadow. In a segment made up of riders with very different ideas about just what makes a great gravel bike, we specifically designed Arid Carbon to be the mould breaker, the bike to bridge that gap between differing ideologies thanks to its enormous capacity for adaptation. Because when it comes down to it, gravel biking is simply a very personal discipline.
Riders have always adapted their bikes, based on many different factors, to be exactly what they want them to be. So that’s why, when designing the Arid Carbon, we kept in mind just how diverse our field of riders would be and likewise how varied their take on ‘gravel’ would be. We specifically designed Arid Carbon to be able to adapt to just about anyone.
The Devil’s in the Detail
We’ve really gone to town on the details. Arid Carbon has HHG internal cable guides to facilitate maintenance and keep the frame lines really clean, especially under the stem, and the UDH derailleur hanger provides the stiffness and precision you need when pedalling hard over rough terrain. 1x drivetrain only, the bottom bracket is threaded for maximum stiffness, and once again, ease of maintenance.
The frame and fork combined provide mounting points for up to six water-bottles, and generous frame and fork dimensions take up to 50mm wide tyres with clearance to spare. The bike also features the all-new Mondraker ‘Carry-On’ system.
Carry-on: Next Gen Hand Luggage
Riding the Arid Carbon is like writing your own screenplay. Racing, adventure, singletrack or the daily commute, Arid Carbon is going to be there with you whatever the script; and when you need to take something with you you’ve got internal frame storage for the first time ever on a Mondraker. Whether it be basic tools, a bite to eat, documents or clothing, Mondraker’s ‘Carry-On’ system has you covered. Accessible through a watertight, dustproof cover on the downtube, you can carry the essentials safely, securely and quietly.
Three custom-made, internal yet easily accessible, double-lapped zipper bags keep things neat and tidy and mean that you won’t need additional packs or accessories for those shorter trips. One of the bags is specifically designed to carry a spare tube and tyre levers. Another for a mini-pump or CO2 cannisters, and the third for a multitool… or… you can use them for whatever fits your needs better on the day.

Better Fit, Better Geometry
A key feature of Arid Carbon is the adoption of 5 different sizes, the better to cover all types of rider. The new ML size goes beyond just adding a size to the traditional S, M, L, XL lineup; rather it reduces the jump between sizes while also making the smallest model a little less rangy and the largest a little more spacious. As a result, we’ve not only made Arid Carbon fit riders on the extremes better than ever before, we’ve also made fine tuning your fit better for everyone by having smaller steps between sizes. Arid Carbon is the latest Mondraker to take this step, after the recently released SLY and the latest version of the Crafty Carbon.
In fitting with the Mondraker badge on the headtube, Arid Carbon adopts innovative geometry stats with generous reach figures and stem lengths of between 60mm and 90mm depending on frame size, a 70° head angle and 425mm chainstays. The riding position is extremely comfortable and confidence inspiring thanks in part to the new ONOFF handlebar range, the result of intensive development over the last 12 months. Strength, posture and handling have all been refined.
Putting Down the Power
The pleasure of driving yourself forward. Nothing but your legs, your strength, your endurance. At a time when e-Bikes seem to be taking over, bikes like Arid Carbon take us back to the origins of cycling, of unadulterated fun and freedom to roam, detached from complications and trouble.
Arid Carbon is unmistakeably a Mondraker in every way, yet with its own character thanks in part to its distinctive and technologically advanced rear triangle design. Likewise, more than 10 years of development of Forward Ge- ometry shine through when riding the Arid Carbon; that trademark blend of aggressiveness, control and fun that mark every Mondraker regardless of discipline.
Arid Carbon is an origins bike, a return to pure cycling, yet offers all the advantages of high-tech frame construction and quality components. Arid Carbon plants Mondraker firmly in the world of gravel riding.
Four Builds – All Fast
Arid Carbonis available in four different builds: Arid Carbon, Arid Carbon R, Arid Carbon RR, and the range-topping Arid Carbon RR SL which is also available as a frame only option. All four builds share the same Stealth Air Carbon frame and fork, and the same 400mm long, 27.2mm diameter Onoff S9 seatpost. Whichever build you go for you’ll be on a heater from the very first time you turn a crank.

]]>Paired with MAHLE X20 or X30 motors, the system boasts a weight of just 2.5 kilograms with the X20, generating as much torque as a 55 Nm mid-drive. The XS System is compatible with the full MAHLE Ecosystem and is already available in the market.
“Our passion for innovation and commitment to cyclists inspire us to continually push boundaries. With the XS system, we have distilled the e-bike down to its most essential elements, delivering unmatched value,” said Jochen Sommer, General Manager of MAHLE SmartBike Systems. Battery integration has long posed a challenge for bike manufacturers due to size and assembly complexities. MAHLE’s XS system solves this by offering a streamlined e-bike setup powered entirely by a 1kg external battery, which conveniently fits in a standard water bottle cage. In addition, the newly developed Smart Motor Controller can be mounted inside or outside the frame, allowing for minimalistic, unobtrusive integration—making it possible to use standard muscular bike frames to create fully functional eBikes.
Without sacrificing performance, the XS system is comprised of only the essential components: the eX1 External Battery, XS Smart Controller, X20 or X30 Hub Drive Unit, and a Torque or PAS (Pedal Assist) Sensor. This minimalism reduces the system’s environmental footprint by downsizing components and simplifying the system’s architecture. Furthermore, its ease of maintenance and broad range of accessories provide limitless customization opportunities.
The eX1 battery fits perfectly for daily use, offering over 170Wh of capacity. “In our research, we found that even less than 100Wh are sufficient for most daily activities —urban commuting, short rides—so we focused on optimizing for what riders need. The result is XS: a light, efficient system that perfectly suits everyday use,” said Marco de la Serna, Head of Product, Strategy, and Business Development at MAHLE SmartBike Systems.
Additionally, the eX1 battery serves as a Range Extender for any existing MAHLE X20 or X30 system and as a power bank to charge devices such as phones or laptops thanks to a USB-C port integrated in the Energy Hub charger, which comes along with the system.
The XS system also integrates with the expansive X-series accessory line, enhancing both performance and user experience. Customization is nearly limitless, with optional accessories like the Duo, eShifters, and Pulsar ONE, among others, available for added functionality.
Users can also connect to the MAHLE Digital Ecosystem via their eBike, laptop, smartphone, or Apple Watch, opening the door to the present and future of the smartbike revolution. The MAHLE digital ecosystem enables a multitude of functionalities, providing a perfect symbiosis between user and eBike.
Using the system is very intuitive. With an intuitive control, riders can power on the system, switch between assistance modes, and monitor battery levels directly from the interface atop the eX1 External Battery. The system also offers automatic assistance, enhancing ease of use.
